About UsComUnion is a project of the Research & Development team of IT Group, Inc. The project started life long ago as a proprietary, home-grown solution to manage the accounting and financial data of our customers. From a simple GL-based bookkeeping system for producing P&L statements and balance sheets, the solution has evolved over time into a full-fledged ERP system. As far back as 1997, the idea behind ComUnion was developed using a DOS-based system built on Visual Foxpro. Later on, in 2004, this would be migrated to a Microsoft Windows-based Client-Server platform built using Visual Basic running on a Microsoft SQL Server backend. This served us well for a while but we eventually ran into scalability and maintenance issues--specially in distributed environments. The platform also did not fit well into the emerging paradigm of distributed, web-native computing. At about the same time, we also started seeing a growing interest in open source and the use of dynamic languages. Wanting to take advantage of this emerging trend, and seeing the inherent benefits, we embarked on the decision to do another port in late 2007. This time we made the conscious decision to develop the application on an open source stack (using Apache, MySQL, and PHP), and release the code to the public with our adoption of an open source license. Design GoalsThe ComUnion platform is designed and built with the goal of increasing the productivity of employees involved in the day-to-day operations of a small to medium-sized businesses. We thought that this market is terribly undeserved by existing vendors and products, with most solutions out there being either too complex or too expensive. We wanted to design a simple, easy to use, elegant and inexpensive system that would enable a typical SME organization to increase their productivity by leveraging just one software solution to manage their financial and transactional data.
